A brief history of sweet almond oil

Derived from the almond tree with its pretty blossoms and popular ‘fruit’, almond oil has been used in skincare and wellbeing throughout history ever since the Ancient Chinese, Ayurvedic and Greco-Persian schools of Medicine.

It’s important to know, that almond oil or sweet almond oil is not the same as bitter almond oil, which you might also hear about. Bitter almond oil is from a specific fruit and has slightly different properties. For one, while sweet almond oil is a fixed oil and will not evaporate, bitter almond oil is an essential oil, which is volatile and does evaporate.

Historically, people have used bitter almond oil for stretch marks, spasms, pain and coughs, but it’s important to be extremely cautious and only use it with appropriate advice as it can be toxic.

Suffice to say, that’s not what we use in our products. On the contrary, sweet almond oil is typically used to treat dry skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. It has continued to be used across the centuries and has often been found in therapy rooms for use in massages.
